00:00 Anthony Gargano: Welcome! It is the TropCast Episode Two and today, oh man, I’m just so excited because we’re gonna have some fun with two of my favorite things, and that is whiskey and beer. I’m Anthony Gargano along with Maureen Williams, Maureen Crawley Williams, our MCW. You love your whiskey and beer?
00:24 Maureen Crowley Williams: Oh, I do.
00:24 AG: You have that great taste?
00:26 MW: Can’t wait.
00:27 AG: Alright. Well, joining us right now is the man. He is the Food and Beverage Manager with the Trop, it’s our buddy, Mario. What do you say, Mario!
00:38 Mario: Hey, what’s going on guys? Good to be here with you.
00:40 AG: This is awesome! So it is the Beer and Whiskey Fest live at the Trop, Saturday, October 15th, The Grand Exhibition Center at Tropicana, Atlantic City. And so do my eyes deceive me? Or as I’m looking at this, there is all kinds of craft beer and all kinds of brown to make me smile. Tell us about this event.
01:05 Mario: Well, it’s a… We’re so super excited about it. We’re gonna have probably about 80 different craft beers available and we have well over 30 whiskeys. And it’s just gonna be a fantastic event. It’s gonna be on Saturday, October 15th. It’s gonna be between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM. And as you said, it’s gonna be at our Grand Exhibition Center and that’s located on the fourth floor of the South Tower here at the Tropicana. If you’d like some ticket information, it’s gonna be $30 which is a fantastic, fantastic price for this kind of an event. And that’s for advanced ticket sales and that’s gonna be available through Ticketmaster here at the Tropicana Box Office. And day of event is gonna be $35. So I mean how can you go wrong?
01:58 AG: This is outrageous. I gotta whet my appetite a little bit, alright? So let’s go through the process. When you’re looking to go grab 80 craft beers and 30 whiskeys, that’s a difficult job. First of all, it’s a difficult job to narrow it down, Mario. So you have the palate for this thing. How did you go and get these incredible whiskeys and craft beers selection?
02:27 Mario: Well, we have really, really great beverage partners that work with us here at the Tropicana and they’re fantastic. So when we put the word out that we were looking to put this event together, obviously, we go to the ones that know it the best. So we went to our distributors and we asked them to please submit what they think or what is out in the market now that’s the greatest and the best and what people are looking for, and even just some new things that may not even be out yet. They came back right away with a whole bunch of really great suggestions. Essentially, like I said, we relied on them and their expertise to suggest to us what they feel the public wants to have. And like I said, we came up with these really tremendous lists of craft beers and whiskeys, that we’re just super super excited to introduce to everyone that’s gonna be part of the event on that day.
03:28 AG: Alright. Let’s start with the craft beer ’cause I have with me the expert. When it comes to craft beer, MCW is the person.
03:38 MW: I’m no expert. I just… I know what I like. And I like your list you got going on here.
03:42 Mario: That’s great, isn’t it?
03:43 MW: Oh, I like that Pumking. I can’t wait. It’s the perfect time of year for that too.
03:47 Mario: Yep. So it’s great because like I said, it’s… Although it looks overwhelming when you say, “Wow, we have 80 beers, 37 whiskeys,” there are those that are gonna gravitate towards a certain thing. And some people are gonna come in and they’re just gonna wanna experience the seasonals. There are some that are gonna come in and have already tried some of these, so they’re gonna wanna try something new. Because again, it is as you can imagine a pretty big undertaking to conquer 80 beers, 37 whiskeys. I don’t know that I could do it, and I’m no slouch, but… [laughter] Again, there will be those… As far as I’m concerned, when I go to one of these events, I wanna go and see what’s new, what I haven’t tried. Like I said, there’s gonna be a lot of seasonal stuff. There are stouts and ales that are aged in bourbon barrels which adds a whole different complex…
04:46 AG: Yeah, there’s the Anderson Valley. This is wild. The Anderson Valley, it’s the Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel, Aged, Salted Caramel Porter.
04:57 Mario: Yeah. How does that sound?
05:00 MW: Delicious! Like breakfast right now.
05:02 AG: Oh, my God! And then you have the Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel, Aged, Boont Barl. That’s the barley, the amber ale.
05:10 Mario: Yeah. Yeah. Again, if you’ve never had a bourbon barrel aged brew, which I’ve had the pleasure of trying, it’s just like I said; it just adds a whole different complexity to what drinking a beer is.
05:27 AG: No. Well, Mario, I gotta run some of these by MCW and I want you to listen and be impressed because she’s gonna be a consultant for you. By the end of the TropCast Episode Two, I want MCW to be your consultant. You ready for this?
05:47 Mario: I’m ready.
05:47 AG: I’m gonna run it by her. Alright. So MCW, Uinta Brewing has a Crooked Series Sour Raspberry.
05:55 MW: Well, I don’t want to correct you, but I think it’s Uinta, isn’t it?
05:58 AG: Well, you know better than I do! See?
06:00 MW: Am I wrong?
06:01 AG: Uinta it is.
06:02 Mario: I don’t get in the middle of… [laughter] I’ll let you guys figure that out.
06:06 AG: Alright. So it’s Uinta, are you correct…
06:08 MW: And I love a sour!
06:09 AG: So the sour raspberry, do you like that?
06:12 MW: I do. I love that.
06:14 AG: So also from Uinta, The Crooked Series Labyrinth Oak Aged Black Ale.
06:21 MW: I’ve never had that. That sounds rare.
06:23 AG: That is…
06:24 Mario: Right?
06:25 AG: Oh, my God.
06:27 Mario: And you know, I just wanted just to interject really quick and just some of these brews, they’re pretty pricey, so it’s a great opportunity again, at this price point to be able to try beers that normally would go for upwards of 10, $12 a bottle. So like I said, it’s just a great, great opportunity at that price point to be trying some really, really excellent, excellent brews and whiskeys.
06:54 AG: Alright. So MCW, I’ll throw it to you. A Southern Tier Pumpking.
06:58 MW: That’s my favorite seasonal. That’s my favorite pumpkin beer.
07:01 AG: Is it really?
07:01 MW: Yeah.
07:03 AG: Alright.
07:03 MW: This time of year. Mmm.
07:04 AG: How about the Victory Golden Monkey?
07:07 MW: That’s like a nine percenter I think, yeah. That’ll get the job done.
07:14 AG: How about the Firestone Union Jack?
07:18 MW: Delicious.
07:19 AG: And the Luponic Distortion?
07:21 MW: That I’ve never had, so I’m excited to try that.
07:23 AG: You know what I think about that one, Mario? The Luponic Distortion.
07:26 Mario: I have not had the pleasure of trying that myself either.
07:30 AG: That sounds outrageous.
07:31 MW: Alright.
07:31 AG: Alright. Now, you’re a big fan, MCW, of the Ommegang Brewery.
07:34 MW: I am.
07:34 AG: Right? A hall of fame beer.
07:36 MW: Good stuff. Yeah.
07:37 AG: But they have the Nirvana IPA and The Great Beyond.
07:40 MW: Love an IPA. You’re an IPA guy.
07:42 AG: I do like the IPA. The Nirvana IPA from Ommegang and the Great Beyond. Man, what is that?
07:50 MW: I don’t know.
07:51 AG: That’s unbelievable. Now, you also have… This is pretty cool too for the event that you’re featuring some great Jersey beers, as well.
08:00 Mario: Absolutely.
08:00 AG: Right? And so how about this from Spellbound, you have the Specialty Firkin and that is Peppered Bacon and Maple Ale.
08:09 MW: Firkins are good.
08:10 Mario: They’re actually creating that specifically or especially for us for this event.
08:16 MW: Wow.
08:17 Mario: Yeah, we’re very, very excited as you can imagine. When we first heard that that was the flavor profile, we were like, “Oh, my God.” Yeah, that may not make it to the event.
08:28 AG: Oh, my God. That’s awesome. Alright. You also have Tuckahoe Brewing and that has the Anglesea Ale. I love the title. So you know what is great too is like, some of the titles of the beers are so enticing that I could actually taste it when I’m speaking about it.
08:46 Mario: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. And there’s some great ones here like… I know like Evil Genius has Stacy’s Mom. Spring House, Astounding She-Monster. So stuff like that, it’s just real fun just to go through and look at some of the names.
09:03 MW: The Clown Shoes.
09:04 Mario: Yep. Clown Shoes, it’s another great brewery. Mango Kolsch and Clementine. So pretty cool stuff.
09:13 AG: Now MCW, you know these brewers, you know Magic Hat.
09:17 MW: Yeah. Oh, yeah.
09:18 AG: And they have the Vamplifier.
09:20 MW: Ooh.
09:21 AG: Which sound really interesting, Mario. The Vamplifier. You know New Belgian Brewing. I know you know that one.
09:27 MW: I love a Belgium.
09:28 AG: Alright. You know the Great Lakes Brewery.
09:30 MW: Yes.
09:31 AG: The Commodore Perry.
09:32 MW: Yes.
09:33 AG: I think I shall be sampling that one. You of course, know the 1911 Cider, so you have the ciders.
09:39 MW: I love ciders.
09:39 AG: Right. The Raspberry and the Blueberry Cider.
09:42 MW: Ooh.
09:44 AG: Alright. You have the Spring House, so Mario you mentioned the Astounding She-Monster, that’s from Spring House Brewery.
09:50 Mario: Yeah.
09:51 AG: The Traveler Beer. I always liked the Traveler… They had the Grapefruit Traveler. Now, you like the Grapefruit.
09:57 MW: I do, I like a Grapefruit.
10:00 AG: The Grapefruit Traveler. The Heavy Seas Brewery Company.
10:04 MW: Good beers.
10:04 AG: Right. The Loose Cannon and the Double Cannon. How about this one, the Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing Company has Funnel Cake and What The Butler Saw.
10:15 MW: What is that about?
10:16 Mario: Right? Again, I haven’t tried those and I’m just kinda making my own notes of the ones that I definitely wanna try and that’s on my list. [laughter]
10:25 MW: Yeah, me too. Down the Shore, you gotta have those.
10:28 Mario: Absolutely.
10:30 AG: You’ve got the Beach Haus, the German Brewing and so Haus is spelled H-A-U-S. And so you have a great Pils and a Hopbahn. So you get a little German action and from the Beach Haus. Which that sounds awesome. And then you go to Breckenridge Brewery has a little Vanilla Porter and a Breck IPA.
10:53 Mario: Yeah.
10:54 AG: Man, this is unbelievable. The list is endless, Mario.
10:57 MW: Yeah, the list is crazy. And some of these are rare and expensive, like you said.
11:01 Mario: Absolutely. Like some of them I kinda looked at and I was like, “Ooh, that’s pricey.” But you know what, like I said, we wanna give everyone just an absolutely fantastic experience. We want them to come here and say like, “That was the best beer fest, whiskey fest that I’ve ever been to and I think that that’s what we put together here. And again, I have to give a lot of credit to our beverage partners for submitting these suggestions because they were absolutely outstanding.
11:29 AG: Alright. Let’s talk a little brown shall we. We covered some beer and I love a nice brown like a gentleman, Mario. You know what I mean?
11:38 Mario: I hear you.
11:40 AG: I’m a failed writer, right. So I love to sit down and pen with a nice brown and think I’m Keats. You know what I’m saying?
11:51 Mario: Gotcha.
11:52 AG: So here’s some whiskeys that are gonna be here for the Beer and Whiskey Fest. Of course, a huge array from Jack Daniels, including the Old Forester and the Woodford Reserve?
12:05 Mario: Yep, again great, great brands.
12:08 AG: You have the George Dickel, and look at this, man, you have the Nine-year Select, you have the Rye, you have the White, you have the Amador, the Amador Double Barrel.
12:18 Mario: Yeah.
12:19 AG: My god, this is unbelievable. The Tuthilltown and Glenfiddich, so you’ll have some Hudson Baby Bourbon and some Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon Barrel Reserve. That’s expensive, I know that’s expensive.
12:34 Mario: Absolutely, and like I said, we really, really, really wanted to give our guests just an absolutely great experience and for them to be able to sample beers and whiskeys that maybe ordinarily they wouldn’t be able to under normal circumstances. So it’s just a great, great opportunity to be able to do that.
12:55 AG: There’s one that caught my eye, and you gotta forgive me because I don’t know how to pronounce it…
13:00 MW: And I can’t help, I’m not giving him much help.
13:02 AG: MCW, Can you pronounce this?
13:03 MW: Barr an Uisce?
13:06 Mario: Barr an. Barr an… [laughter]
13:09 MW: Barr an Uisce?
13:09 Mario: Barr an Uisce. Barr an Uisce.
13:10 MW: Barr an Uisce! There you go.
13:12 AG: Alright, now this caught my eye because they’re gonna be featuring the Blended Wicklow Rare Irish Whiskey.
13:19 Mario: Yeah.
13:20 AG: And the Single Malt 1803 Irish Whiskey.
13:23 Mario: Yeah. So again, I’m not particularly a whiskey guy, but I’ve just recently kinda started venturing into that spirit because I mean I will leave no spirit unturned.
13:43 MW: You’d fit right in with us.
13:46 Mario: Absolutely. So again, like you can see, it’s just gonna be some things that maybe a lot of us just have not had the opportunity. Jack Daniels, again, great brand but I’ve drank Jack Daniels, I’ve had the Jack Honey, the Jack Fire, so it may not be something that I’m gonna particularly go and say, “Oh, I gotta definitely try that.” But like some of these other ones that maybe you haven’t, like those are definitely the ones that I’m gonna hit and I’m sure, like I said, a lot of folks would be interested in trying what that’s gonna taste like.
14:18 AG: My god. And you know I love too, the Trop is also offering a special room package, a special hotel package; it includes two tickets to the Beer & Whiskey Festival, an overnight stay on Saturday night, October 15, all for just $379. You can book your package, call 800-345-8767 and you can refer to the code TBWFEST, which is a great idea.
14:46 Mario: Yep, absolutely, absolutely.
14:48 AG: And oh, by the way, you got some musical entertainment going on too.
14:53 Mario: We do. We have, we’re gonna have a DJ and a band. And as far as the band is concerned, it’s gonna be John Eddie and His Dirty Ol Band.
15:02 AG: That’s so cool. They’re gonna be live, performing live from 5:30 to 8:00. And so between sets, you’ll have the DJ, but how cool is that. You get John Eddie and actually you can listen to some of his music which is incredible at johneddie.com, so get a little… That’s perfect. John Eddie and His Dirty Ol Band playing while you sample some incredible whiskeys and exotic craft beers.
15:33 Mario: And on top of all that, if that wasn’t enough, let’s add some more, right? So we have… We also are gonna have some crafters also there that will be offering an assortment of just about anything, maybe household decorative items to jewelery and things like that.
15:53 AG: Oh, wow.
15:54 Mario: We’re gonna have an area where there’s gonna be a bunch of crafters there, and I think one of the things that some of us that are really seriously into the beers and the whiskeys are also gonna have some informational seminars as well. And so we’re excited about that. We don’t have that list completed just yet of who’s gonna be there, but we’re gonna have a total of six and again these will be brew masters, distillers, possibly owners and things like that, that are gonna be talking about their brands and just the process in general. So that’s gonna be really, really interesting and exciting as well.
16:35 AG: Now, that’s awesome. And by the way, all attendees must be 21, must have identification, and The Tropicana cares about our visitors, wants everyone to have a great time and Tropicana strongly encourages responsible drinking. Please don’t drink and drive, that’s why the room special is such a perfect thing, where you can have fun and you can let loose a little bit and not worry about anything.
16:58 Mario: Absolutely. And you hit the nail on the head, we want everybody to come in here and have a great time, but at the same time, we want everyone to leave safely. And we’re gonna make sure that that happens.
17:10 AG: Taxi, Ubers, you name it or just stay at The Trop, have a great time. Once again, it’s Saturday, October 15, from 2:00 to 8:00 PM in the Grand Exhibition Center at Tropicana Atlantic City. It’s 80 beers, 30 whiskeys, wow, it’s just gonna be…
17:27 MW: And one ticket gets you all that, right?
17:29 Mario: Absolutely. Yes, one ticket. One ticket.
17:32 AG: We can’t wait to see you, Mario.
17:35 Mario: Like that Golden Ticket, right, Willy Wonka?
17:36 MW: Yeah, really.
17:38 AG: Yeah. For adults! It’s the Golden Ticket. I love it, man.
17:42 Mario: The Golden Ticket.
17:43 AG: Mario, I cannot wait to see you and cannot wait to give you a toast to this great event.
17:48 Mario: Absolutely. Likewise guys, it’s been an absolute, absolute pleasure and I’m so looking forward to this event and also to meeting up with you and trying some of these great beers and whiskeys that we haven’t had the opportunity to do just yet.
18:02 AG: Love it, love it. It’s the Beer and Whiskey Fest. It’s incredible. It’s Mario, the Food and Beverage Manager at Tropicana. Mario, great stuff, brother. We’ll see you soon.
