00:22 Maureen Crawley Williams: When does that start?
00:23 AG: Oh, yeah.
00:24 MW: Sign me up.
00:25 AG: Right up your alley. Now it’s the second Annual Jersey Shore Wine Festival, doing the Indoor Summer Beach Bash going on right now. So, Saturday, February 25th from noon until 6:00, Sunday, February 26th, from noon until 4:00 PM. And here you go. Are you ready?
00:46 MW: I’m listening, let’s go.
00:47 AG: Alright. I’m just making sure.
00:48 MW: Hurry up, I need purple teeth.
00:49 AG: [laughter] You are the purple teeth. You are… [laughter] You are no stranger to purple teeth. Of all things, let me ask you a question. Of all things, of all spirits, wine is your favorite, right?
01:05 MW: Correct.
01:06 AG: You love beer. You love Prosecco.
01:10 MW: I do, a little champagne.
01:12 AG: But wine is your favorite.
01:13 MW: Yeah.
01:14 AG: Alright. So here’s the deal, you’re gonna be sampling over 150 of New Jersey’s best known wines. 12 wine makers and like some incredible wine makers, too. I gotta tell you, I never knew, you know more about wine, I think…
01:32 MW: I like wine. I love wine.
01:34 AG: I do too, but I’m used to Italian wines, California wines, Spanish. Alright?
01:41 MW: I’ll try any grape.
01:43 AG: Give me a…
01:44 MW: Give me a grape.
01:45 AG: A Malbec. But I didn’t realize how good the wine is locally, in South Jersey.
01:50 MW: Yeah. And they have it right here in the Trop.
01:53 AG: It really is tremendous. So you could sample all these incredible wines while enjoying little artisan crafters, handpainted glass, educational seminars, wine experts, live entertainment. Your tickets include a tasting glass, wine seminars, cheese, and fruit plate. What do you think?
02:15 MW: I need my ticket now.
02:18 AG: Alright. Well, we got a hookup, in fact. We got Mario who is the Tropicana’s food and beverage extraordinaire. So Mario is gonna join us.
02:28 MW: We’ll be in good hands.
02:29 AG: Alright. So maybe we get lucky and get a hookup.
02:31 MW: I think so.
02:32 AG: And I think it’s a stay-over Saturday, drink all wines, come back, it could be a double, double.
02:40 MW: I like the sounds of that.
02:42 AG: Alright. Well, let’s go. Oh, we have a special guest, that’s right, we love him, MCW. He’s the man who feeds our palates. We love spirits, and we love everything Tropicana. We have the man who has the palate of kings. That’s right, it’s Mario. Good morning, Mario.
03:04 Mario: How do I follow an intro like that? I’ll tell you, from your mouth to God’s ears.
03:09 AG: [laughter] You do, you have the great talent, man.
03:12 Mario: Thank you so much. That was awesome.
03:13 AG: No, it’s true. It’s true. You took great care of us for Whiskey Fest. And now, Mario, we have an incredible one, it’s Tropicana’s Jersey Shore Wine Festival. How about that?
03:27 Mario: Absolutely. Oh, that’s fantastic. And, as you know, from having been part of the Beer and Whiskey Fest, we’re just always looking for something to offer our guests. And again, I just believe this is just gonna be another home run for us here at Tropicana.
03:46 AG: Well, it’s the 2nd Annual Jersey Shore Wine Festival, and it takes place during the Summer Beach Bash, which we love, in the grand exhibition center. And it’s Saturday, February 25th from noon until 6:00 PM and Sunday, February 26th, from noon until 4:00 PM. So you’re gonna be sampling, you’re gonna have artisan crafters, handpainted glass, educational seminars, wine experts, live entertainment. The tickets include tasting glass, wine seminars, cheese, and fruit plate, Mario.
04:23 Mario: I’m telling you, we don’t know what else we can do. We wanna make sure that we can provide a great time at affordable price for everyone who’d come down. Like you said, on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th, where else can you get all that, that you just mentioned for $25. $25 is the ticket price. And again, it’s just fantastic. We have over a dozen Jersey wineries participating, and close to 150, I’ll say it again, 150 different types of wine that we can come in and sample.
05:03 AG: 150 plus wines. Oh, man. That’s impressive. You know what’s funny, is that my partner over here, MCW is the purple lips girl. She loves her wine. She’s always got purple lips on a Monday morning. You always know what she was doing over the weekend. So let’s look at some of the wineries, shall we, that we’re gonna have. And I want you to tell us a little bit about it. Give me some insight. I need your power, I need your education. You are everything, sommelier meets spirits expert. So let’s go for it. Let’s start and look at the Auburn Roads Vineyards, and that’s Pilesgrove, New Jersey and…
05:48 Mario: Pilesgrove, New Jersey, that’s correct.
05:50 AG: Yeah. And so tell me about this winery.
05:53 Mario: Auburn Road, just a great, great local winery. If you have not been there, I’ve had the pleasure of having visit it and they do a really, really fantastic job. They’re gonna be offering about a dozen different types of wines. And we will see on the list as we go through all these different wineries, that we’re gonna have the traditional, the Chardonnays, the Cabernets, the Sauvignon Blancs, etcetera, etcetera. But then there’s a lot of proprietary wines that they only make at their own winery, which we’ll be able to enjoy as well.
06:28 AG: So, The Auburn Road Vineyards. It looks like some incredible stuff, Mario. The Good Karma 2014, the Classico 2013. We got some good stuff here from Auburn Roads. Auburn Road, excuse me.
06:44 Mario: We do. We do, and as you see, of course the Garden State. We are the Garden State, right? So you’re gonna see a lot of these wineries offering some fruit-based wines, which are fantastic. Peach, blueberries, cranberries. Things like that. So, in addition to, again just the wines that we’re all mostly familiar with, the mainstream, Chardonnays, Cabernets…
07:09 AG: Sure.
07:10 Mario: Pinots. Again, they’re gonna have a lot of really great fruit-infused wines, proprietary wines. So, the choices are just gonna be endless.
07:22 AG: That’s cool.
07:24 Mario: Yeah.
07:24 AG: That’s cool.
07:25 Mario: Now the one nice thing I want to add as well is, what’s a little different about this event is that folks that actually can come in and as they taste and sample, you will actually be able to buy either wines by the bottle or by the case.
07:41 AG: Wow, that’s great.
07:43 Mario: Absolutely.
07:45 AG: Oh, I love that. See, that’s a big part. That’s a big selling point for me, I love wine, love good wine, so if I find something that I like, and that’s part of the whole deal is to enjoy yourself, come, get a room, have fun, do your wine tasting, and then you can go back to the room and then go out and do everything else at the casino and at the hotel. But I love the fact that I can just go buy, I can buy one of the things that I love. So, I’m just looking at some of the, at the other wineries. You have the Bellview Winery from Landisville, New Jersey.
08:18 Mario: Yeah, another great participating winery. They do a really, really great job with their wines. There is one in particular, their Coeur d’Est. And Coeur d’Est is a, if I understand correctly, it’s a particular parameters that a lot of the New Jersey wineries were given using specific grapes and they had to come up with their own proprietary blend to make this Coeur d’Est and they do a fantastic job with theirs. Very, very interesting, but a really, really great job, great winery.
08:53 AG: Alright, how about the Chestnut Run Farm?
08:58 Mario: Chestnut Run Farm, they’re gonna be offering five different types of wines. And some of their wines that they’re gonna be offering, as I said before, alluding to the fruit part of it…
09:11 AG: Yeah.
09:11 Mario: They’ll be doing an Asian pear wine, a semi-sweet Asian pear wine, a Shiro plum wine, a spiced sweet Asian pear wine, so they’re focusing a lot on their pear in that winery.
09:25 AG: That’s pretty cool, and then they have the semi-sweet Fuji apple wine too. That should be interesting.
09:31 Mario: Yep, absolutely.
09:33 AG: How about from Hammonton, not far from Atlantic City.
09:37 Mario: Not far at all.
09:38 AG: DiMatteo Vineyards.
09:40 Mario: DiMatteo Vineyards.
09:41 AG: Yeah.
09:42 Mario: Yeah. I know I sound redundant, but a lot of these wineries, they just put out some really, really great wines up. For those folks that have not had the opportunity to try Jersey wines, a lot of us get kinda caught up in the whole…
10:00 AG: Sure.
10:01 Mario: West Coast, Sonoma, Napa. But they don’t realize, right in their backyard, we have some really, really great wineries producing some fantastic wines. DiMatteo is one of ’em. They have a nice Vidal, they do a regular red table wine, a white Merlot, a chocolate raspberry, a cranberry cherry, blueberry. So again, you’re gonna see a lot of these wineries infusing a lot of their fruits that Jersey is famous for.
10:32 AG: Right, I mean for your blueberries in Hammonton, right, Mario? They go, that goes together.
10:38 Mario: Oh, absolutely, no doubt.
10:40 AG: Alright, so let’s go further ’cause I wanna hit all these wineries and I wanna give ’em all love because there’s so many of them, they have such great, incredible wines that we need to talk about our own and Old York Cellars is another one.
10:54 Mario: Yep, and I wanna say really quickly, we have 12 wineries participating, but that is just a very small fraction of the total wineries that we have in operation throughout the state of New Jersey and we’re very, very lucky to have these 12. These are more of the local, regional to the area. But you travel up and down the coast of Jersey and you’re gonna find wineries popping up. And again producing really, really great wines. Just wanted to mention that.
11:25 AG: Let me ask a question about that. This’ll probably be a dumb question, but I gotta ask. How come we have seen this, and over the last couple of years all the wineries, what has popped to allow New Jersey to become such a very good and underrated wine producing region?
11:46 Mario: Well, I can only say from my discussions with some of the experts, is that the soil, the climate, it lends well to making great wines and bringing in the right grape and having experienced hands working with them, we can, in the state of New Jersey, produce some really great wines. It’s a lot of things. Again, being the Garden State and being well known for our farmland and some of the produce and fruits that we put out in the state, why not wine? We have been, for a long time, and now, I think a lot more people are catching on and they’re seeing really what a great product we can produce. A lot more folks are getting on board and like I said, thank goodness because right in our backyard, there’s nothing nicer for me than on a nice afternoon to just drive half hour away, go to a great winery and just spend the day there sampling and just enjoying some really really great wines.
12:58 AG: Well, it is and I look at this event and I go, well this is such a perfect event especially for like, you have the wintertime blues type of thing that you go in and you could just kinda escape for the day. Right? You just go in, you hang out. You escape. You stay overnight. It’s like a mini vacation when you’re stuck with the winter blues.
13:22 Mario: Yeah and you alluded to it in the very beginning when you opened your show that we are right in the middle of our Beach Bash celebration. For the folks that aren’t aware, I just want to do a shameless plug here. From January 14th through the end of February, we’ve been doing this Beach Bash where we kind of wanna bring the summer indoors and we’ve been doing a lot of things, selfie stations and we have sand sculptures and we’ve been doing summer-themed cocktails and foods available throughout the quarter and at the Tropicana and the Marketplace. When you come inside the Tropicana, it’s like you are going either forward or backwards, however you wanna look at it, to the summer months, and being able to enjoy that indoors and what a great way to round out the Beach Bash than with this incredible Wine Fest.
14:18 AG: Yeah. Let’s talk about a weekend wine getaway. It’s so perfect. Just to hit some other wineries, the Tomasello Winery also in Hammonton and it looks like they have some really cool wines as well.
14:31 Mario: They do. I actually got to meet one of the owners recently for the first time, Jack. Really, really great gentleman and very knowledgeable, and great conversationalist. It’s always just great to speak with these folks that are experts. Nothing more than I love is when I taste something like a wine or a spirit or a beer and you get to talk to the person whose hands were involved in creating that.
15:00 Mario: It’s a great gift. One that I sure envy but yeah, as you can see some wines here that we’re all familiar with, Chardonnays, Pinot Grigios, but then again we go into like a Cranberry Moscato and Almanique and… I’m sorry… Artisan Orchard Hard Apple Cider. Just fantastic, fantastic array for just about every palate imaginable.
15:28 AG: And then as we move forward through some of the wineries… It’s amazing. I’m looking at the different wines that these wineries are bringing, just so creative.
15:38 Mario: Absolutely.
15:40 AG: Right? That’s the thing I’m looking at. Southwind Vineyard in Millville is bringing a Malbec, they’re bringing the Bloody Hand Cabernet which I need to have. The Bloody Hand Cabernet I need that. A little Mambo De Frutas Sangria. You gotta love that.
16:00 Mario: Oh yeah. That’s gonna get you dancing. Right?
16:07 AG: I look at the Valenzano Winery. The Valenzano Winery is bringing the Jersey Devil Port. I would like to sample some of that. I love a port.
16:17 Mario: The ports… Jersey ports are fantastic. I don’t wanna point anybody out in particular, but I have gone… I’m a port drinker and it’s one of those things that if you go one way, they tend to be too sweet. But I’ve had some of the Jersey ports, and I’m telling you there are some places that are doing a fantastic job with it.
16:44 Mario: Again something to be really proud of that New Jersey is putting out some great port wines. And as you can see as you navigate through the list, we have wineries that are bringing in anywhere from five to six different types wines to upwards of almost a couple of dozen. As you can see, like I said, there are some that are very, very creative and just one winery alone to be able to sample 20 plus different types of wine, that in and of itself is worth the price of admission.
17:23 AG: Well, I love the names. It’s cool because it’s so creative. We were talking about that with beer and whiskey, and I look at some of these wines and I just love the names of them. Is that Plagido’s Winery?
17:39 Mario: Plagido, yeah.
17:41 AG: And they have the Pole Dancer and…
17:43 Mario: The Pole Dancer, right? Why would that catch your eye? I don’t know.
17:48 AG: The 5.8 Earthquake, Concetta’s Casalinga. That’s fantastic!
17:55 Mario: Yeah. You know we have others, Sweet Love, Make Me Blush, Shore Thing. Nutty Quaker, Fallen Quaker.
18:06 AG: That’s right, that’s the Wagonhouse Winery. Had some of that.
18:08 Mario: Kick in a Glass.
18:09 AG: That is fantastic. Also had Villari Vineyards. They had the One Nation Blueberry Port, that sounds really interesting. One Nation Red, the One Nation White, the One Nation Blue, and the One Nation Pink. Very cool stuff from Villari.
18:28 Mario: And then you look at that very same winery and then there’s the Chardonnay, right? There’s the Rosé, the Merlot, the Chambourcin, the Moscato, again the wines that we’re all familiar with and kind of comfortable with, and then we go off and they kinda entice us to try some of these other things as well.
18:47 AG: That’s fantastic.
18:49 Mario: I gotta tell you one thing. Not a wine snob by any means, but never really kinda gravitated towards the fruity wines, if you wanna call it that, until I started trying them. Once I did, I was like, you know what, I could really like this. And I think that I’m not alone in that. I think people that are kinda, “Oh, I only drink Chardonnay,” or “Oh, I only drink Merlot,” whatever that may be, having the opportunity to come in and be exposed to One Nation Red, One Nation Blueberry Port, it’ll just open up an entirely different world of wines to anyone that cares to try.
19:34 AG: Yeah, it’s a great way to expand your palate. It really is.
19:38 Mario: Absolutely. Absolutely.
19:38 AG: It really is a great, great way to expand your palate. I’m so with you. In fact… And you’re gonna have food there as well, is that correct?
19:48 Mario: Come on, you’re gonna come through the Tropicana and you’re gonna leave hungry? Of course, we’re gonna have food. [laughter] Of course. So the one nice thing is that with the price of admission, which again is only $25, we’re gonna give everyone a fruit and cheese plate to be able to enjoy. But Chef Demetrius and his team is always ready to shock and awe us with their fantastic foods, so we will. We’re gonna have an array of food for sale as always, and I’m sure will not disappoint.
20:28 AG: Yeah, this is incredible. I love the fact again, what’s more, you can buy cases of wine at the event. There’s gonna be Crafters at the event… What a deal too. And if people want tickets, what’s the best way to get tickets, Mario?
20:45 Mario: Well, if you happen to be on property and like to get your tickets while you’re here, we will sell ’em to you at our box office. If not, if you’re at home and wanna purchase your tickets from there, Ticketmaster, that’s the other option. So…
21:00 AG: That’s right, ticketmaster.com or they can call 1-800-745-3000.
21:05 Mario: Yes, sir. So again, we make it easy for anyone to be able to get the tickets to this event. And you mentioned the crafters which is a big part of the event too. Roughly about 13 or so, let’s say over a dozen crafters, and they’ll be offering everything from really soup to nuts.
21:30 Mario: Just to kind of go down that list as well; we kind of reviewed the wineries, but the crafters themselves are gonna be fantastic. City2Shore Gourmet, they’re gonna be offering aged balsamic vinegars, sea-salts, rubs, things like that. Whitehouse Station Sauce Company, all natural handmade hot sauces. Gourmet Creations…
21:50 AG: Wow!
21:50 Mario: We’re going to be offering dry herbs, spices, magical sentiments, handmade soaps, candles, body lotions. I can go on and on and on. We’re gonna have someone here doing jerky. Someone here doing honey, jewelry, so on… Things for the home, decorations and stuff like that. So again, they’re a big big part of the event and they love partnering with us, and I think they’re gonna be offering something for everyone.
22:22 AG: How cool is that? You forget all of that. That is… You’re right, something for everyone is so true because I could go there, and I forgot about the crafts… My head was in the wine, of course, right? Which is unbelievable. But you have something for everyone which is a really cool thing. You know what you gotta do, you gotta come, you gotta experience it, you gotta stay overnight. That’s all, and imbibe and have a great time.
22:50 Mario: Yeah. You come in, you’re sampling some great wines. Now, you have the opportunity also to look not only at wines, but wow, some of the foods that are being offered, now you start thinking about food, right? So now you start looking at these spices and rubs and sea-salting, like wow, I can make this with these things.
23:15 Mario: Now you’re creating whole menus in your head, and now you’re gonna go home and make all this great food and you’re like, “Okay, not only do I have these things, but I really enjoyed these three or four kinds of wine, now I can grab three or four bottles or case of it, and I can take that home with me, too.” I don’t have to say, “Oh where do you have this available for retail, or where can I pick up a bottle of it?” You pick it up right there and then, and you walk out the door with it. It’s like one stop shopping.
23:44 AG: Mario, you’ve done it again, my man. [laughter] This is great.
23:50 Mario: It takes a village. It takes a village.
23:53 AG: I absolutely love it. We cannot wait. February 25th, February 26th. It is Tropicana’s Jersey Shore Wine Festival and once again, with your tickets, you’ll get the tasting glass, the wine seminar, cheese and fruit plate. All kinds of goodies. You gotta get that. You gotta hang out, and you’ll be there, right, so people can say “hey, Mario! Great job, Mario!”
24:21 Mario: Of course, of course. I mean, you know me, where there are beverages, where there are spirits, where there are wines, where there are beers, I’m not far behind, so…
24:32 Mario: It’s all about the quality control. I have to make sure that everything is good. [laughter]
24:37 AG: I love it, Mario, you’re the best. Keep it up, alright?
24:42 Mario: Anthony, it’s great talking to you. Maureen, you as well. You guys are fantastic. We love you guys, and I’m so looking forward to seeing you at the event.
24:50 AG: Can’t wait, buddy. Thank you. There he is. That man with the golden palate. That’s right. Mario. Alright, well we’re not done because in between of all the toasting that we’re gonna be doing during the course of sampling all the great wines, we gotta have a little fun to do as well and this is our online portion which we love. It’s tropicanacasino.com, and I got some new games for us. You ready?
25:19 MW: I’m ready.
25:19 AG: So I got wine sampling. I got new games with Tropicana Casino…
25:21 MW: I love new games.
25:22 AG: Yeah, man. Who doesn’t like new games? Just the beauty of tropicanacasino.com is… Like the games are endless. They’re really cool, so we can get into the Beach Bash spirit online, of course, from anywhere in New Jersey, and we can warm up all of our favorite beach-themed games at tropicanacasino.com. We can earn some comp dollars for our next visit to Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City. We can earn comp dollars today, right now, on our computer, phone, tablet and we can use them anytime we want. We can check out all of the Beach Bash festivities and again, the comp dollars that we earn online can be used toward purchases at the resort or any of the restaurant, retail locations on the property. Isn’t that a good deal?
26:11 MW: Rack ’em up.
26:12 AG: Rack ’em up is right. Rack ’em up. Here’s some exciting games. You ready, here we go. So I think I wanna play a little Tiki Island.
26:19 MW: Okay, tell me more.
26:21 AG: First of all, I like tiki. The word tiki…
26:23 MW: I like the concept of a tiki.
26:25 AG: Right? You like a tiki torch?
26:27 MW: Tiki bar.
26:28 AG: You love a tiki bar. Anything tiki?
26:30 MW: Yeah, I’m in.
26:31 AG: There used to be a place, I believe it was in Jersey. The pub tiki?
26:37 MW: No, what was it called?
26:38 AG: Nah, ’cause it’s Center City. Philly.
26:39 MW: Tiki Club?
26:40 AG: There’s a tiki something.
26:41 MW: Tiki Bar, I think it was actually called.
26:43 AG: I love a tiki anyway. Give me a tiki any day of the week. How about a little Tiki Island? It’s a little slice of slot machine paradise that offers a comp prize of, get this, 20 grand.
26:56 MW: Cha-ching.
26:57 AG: $20,000. Five reels can hit any of up to 20 paylines, and you can play now from just 20 cents a spin. Isn’t that cool? There’s two bonus games where you can’t be shy if you’re gonna knock those cash-filled coconuts off their blocks and don’t forget, I love this, the Puffer Fish bonus, where you’ll be popping the puffers for cash. I kid you not.
27:26 MW: I need to go pop some puffer.
27:29 MW: I wanna play that game, now.
27:31 AG: It sounds fun, doesn’t it?
27:32 MW: Yeah.
27:33 AG: Alright, well let’s play that one. Here’s another one I’m gonna play. Lobstermania 2.
27:38 MW: Ooh, alright.
27:39 AG: Alright? Now, this is a casino floor favorite, Lobstermania. When we go around a casino, keep your eyes peeled for Lobstermania.
27:49 MW: Okay.
27:50 AG: Alright, that’s on the floor. Now, it’s online too at tropicanacasino.com and here we include, how about this? Five reels, 40 paylines. 40 of ’em. Great bonus rounds. It’s five reels and 40 paylines.
28:09 MW: I mean, how can you lose?
28:09 AG: That’s a light out, right?
28:10 MW: You can’t, yeah.
28:11 AG: So you got all kinds of great stuff. You got Lobster Wilds, Scatter Wins, to Lucky Larry’s Buoy Bonus and Lucky Lobster’s Free Spins bonus, you can catch a big win at anytime.
28:27 MW: I like a lucky lobster.
28:28 AG: Hey, pull up that… Hold on. I wanna go right now and I’m gonna pull up my Tiki Island. Before I get to my lobster. Now, I want lobster for dinner, you want lobster too?
28:38 MW: Yeah, me too, me too and a tiki, a tiki drink.
28:41 AG: Alright, let’s go to Tiki Island first. Let’s play this. Look, I’m only gonna go 20 cents a spin. Alright?
28:49 MW: Okay. I got all the time in the world.
