It only happens every two years, alternating between Winter and Summer. The Games that truly define country-specific pride and captivate us all with feats of strength, agility, and wonder. Not everyone is lucky enough to witness these feats in person, but luckily for us, there’s the advent of television to keep us all in the loop. And with live sports, so comes the perfect companion…BEER.
The closest thing next to traveling to all of the amazing countries participating in the games, to celebrate and experience their culture, would be to taste it. Here at Bar Olon, you can do just that. Taste the flavor and refreshment of 12 countries brewing culture, and you may find yourself rooting for them in the games!
Let’s take an inside look at some of the beers offered at Bar Olon, the perfect compliment to watching the Winter Games!
First is the Czech Republic’s own ‘Pilsner Urquell’. It’s the world’s first-ever pilsner type blond lager and echoes tradition in the purest sense. Urquell quite literally translates to ‘the ancient source’. And it makes sense because this beer influenced many mainstream brews we see today! The Czech people should be proud of this ‘OG’ of the beer world!
On to Germany, a country known for its devout ‘Bier’ culture, where we find one of the world’s most iconic beers. The Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is Germany’s #1 Wheat Beer and rightfully so; experts refer to it as a ‘masterpiece of beer’! Taste it and find out for yourself!
Ireland…the land built around the church of ‘The Pub’. Things are always particular when it comes to one of the most iconic beers on Earth. Guinness, brewed for over 250 years in Dublin, Ireland is the world’s most popular stout. We’ll let it speak for itself
Peroni, Rome’s lager, is the predominant beer of Italy. It’s recognizable green bottle and red label are filled with a brew first created over 150 years ago! It is a pale lager and full of barley malt flavor, yet refreshing to the palate.
Jamaica’s Bobsled team gained international fame and acclaim in the 1988 games. The story even spawned one of our favorite movies. It seems only right that 30 years later we reflect and celebrate with Jamaica’s most famous lager, Red Stripe. Hooray Beer!
Mexico is plentifully represented at Bar Olon. From the classics like Presidente, Corona, Modelo, Tecate and Dos Equis, there’s no shortage of refreshing brews from our neighbor to the south. A dive even further into Mexico’s love of cerveza reveals beers brewed in both Mexican and European tradition. For example, take Bohemia Clasica; a pilsner brewed in the German-style containing more body than its Mexican counterparts, but still retains a clean paleness that we’ve all come to associate with Mexico’s beer traditions. Try one or try them all!
Vamos! On we go to Spain, where we feature one of the more unique beers available at Bar Olon. Estrella ‘Damm Daura’ is a Spanish-style pilsner that, get this, is gluten-free. You may think the lack of gluten may effect flavor but this brew is incredibly balanced with a slightly spicy finish. Our other Spanish offering is Palax, a euro pale lager that we can describe most accurately as crisp and refreshing with herbal notes!
The United Kingdom. Another pub and beer loving country, home to some of the most traditional brews there are. Bar Olon features Original ‘Innis & Gunn’ an oak-aged beer from Scotland with hints of toffee and vanilla. Usually hearing these flavors you may think of heavy and rich like a Guinness, but fear not, this brew is to the contrary! Light and refreshing with tasty notes throughout.
And finally we end with the United States. Our home. While Bar Olon features many of the classic American brews like Yuengling, Bud Light, Sam Adams and others, we’d like to focus on the craft beers available.
From Brooklyn Brewery, taste the ‘Sorachi Ace’, an IPA that is sharp with flavors of lemongrass and and dill. This beer is a cross between Japan and Germany, brewed just 90 miles away. Brewed in Belmar, NJ, ‘Beach Haus Classic’ is an American take on a pilsner that is perfectly malty and sweet.
Magic Hat #9 is one of the fastest growing beers in the USA is appropriately named #9 for no reason to confuse you, just like the beer will your taste buds. It’s unusual dry, but fruity character is truly not your regular IPA. And finally we find ourself with a Jersey standout. Flying Fish Brewery’s ‘Exit 4’ is brewed just under an hour away from Bar Olon. It’s a Belgian-style Trippel with a subdued bitterness and hints of banana and clove. See how the craft movement compares to your American favorites!
So which beer do you try? Whichever catches your fancy! It may be a win on the slopes for Italy that shifts you towards a Peroni. You could catch the Jamaican Bobsled team and want to reminisce about ‘Cool Runnings’ with a Red Stripe, or you could show some good ol’ USA Pride with a forward-thinking modern American craft brew. And even though they may not be represented in the games this year, Bar Olon even features thirst-quenching beers from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Peru!
Just remember, when there’s such an amazing variety of beer, we all win! Enjoy the Winter Games at Bar Olon and stay tuned to @OlonRestaurant’s Instagram Story for a daily featured beer for just $3!
